Here to Move: Serving in the Kitchen

True value isn't just about the doors you knock on; it’s about the network that unlocks them for you.

By Lemuel Villafane · June 25, 2026 · 1 min read

The unmistakable pop-pop-pop of plastic paddles hitting wiffle balls has officially taken over the local sports scene, signaling the arrival of the fitness world’s fastest-growing craze: pickleball. A vibrant cross between tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, this booming sport has captured the wellness community by storm because it is incredibly easy to learn yet highly engaging. At the heart of the court lies "the kitchen"—the strict non-volley zone close to the net where players must let the ball bounce before striking. It is a space that demands quick reflexes, strategic dinks, and patient setups, making it the ultimate equalizer where court strategy and sharp reflexes trump raw power.

Where Fellowship Meets the Net

For the young professionals of JCI Mandaue, "serving in the kitchen" has taken on a profound double meaning with the official creation of the Merry Dinkers. Launched in April 2026 as the dedicated pickleball group for JCI Mandaue members and their guests, this weekly gathering has quickly become the ultimate hub for corporate camaraderie and high-energy networking. Partnering with key local venues like SM JMall to secure premier court spaces, the Merry Dinkers have successfully transformed the trendy sport into a dynamic weekly ritual. By bringing together local businesses, fitness enthusiasts, and civic leaders in sneakers rather than suits, they are proving that the best bonds are formed over an intense, fast-paced rally.

Dinking for a Cause

This creative fusion of wellness and fellowship carries a competitive target: a Php 100,000 fundraising goal completely dedicated to funding JCI Mandaue’s grassroots community projects. Every serve made, court shared, and guest registration fee collected by the Merry Dinkers directly feeds into the chapter's local development programs, supporting vital community development initiatives across Mandaue. By stepping away from traditional, stiff fundraisers and stepping into the literal and figurative kitchen, these active citizens and their guests are proving that changing the community can be as simple—and as exhilarating—as a perfectly executed paddle smash.
